API and Internet Quote Engine Subscribers
Scraping Compulife Data Is Not Permitted
To API and Internet Quote Engine customers: we developed these quoting tools to produce individual quotes, not to harvest our data.
We developed both of these quoting tool options so that our software customers who use either of those options could produce individual quotes for consumers and/or agents which were formatted to the subscriber’s satisfaction, or which could be integrated into other systems such as CRMs or marketing processes.
Neither of those quoting systems was intended to be used so that data could be SCRAPED from Compulife to populate another data matrix that would be used for quoting instead of Compulife.
Why Scraping Doesn’t Serve Consumers
Compulife works VERY hard to keep our data up-to-date and accurate. Inevitably when someone scrapes data from another system, that data becomes stale and out-of-date. We believe that consumers deserve up-to-date and accurate quotes specifically for their age, gender, face amount, etc. They should not be given yesterday’s premiums.
Further, it makes no sense that if someone is 37, you would want to show them quotes for 35 year olds and 40 year olds. If you want to demonstrate that the older someone gets, the more they pay for life insurance, it does not take hundreds of quotes to achieve that objective. What possible purpose would it serve to hit our software with requests for hundreds of quotes?
Showing quotes with multiple face amounts on the same page makes little sense. A good life insurance agent or broker endeavors to identify just how much life insurance the consumer actually needs, and then quotes for that face amount and for that individual. It requires very little effort to quote a couple of other face amounts at the same time.
How We Know
Our systems, in particular our API, tell us when we are dealing with a user that is scraping data and NOT using our systems to produce individual quotes. As use of our API expands, we see more examples of it happening.
I would remind everyone that we spent hundreds of thousands of dollars in legal fees going after scrapers who were doing so without even the courtesy of paying us for the use of our software. You can learn more about that here: www.davidrutstein.com
And that is why our API specifically gives us volume use information and analysis. Just because you are paying us to use our software, does not mean you get to raid it for data to populate other quoting alternatives.
Updated License Agreements
As a result of more than one subscriber scraping, we have had to update both our Internet Quote Engine license agreement:
- U.S.: https://compulife.com/internet-engine-license-agreement/
- Canada: https://compulife.ca/internet-engine-license-agreement/
and the API license agreement:
- U.S.: https://compulife.com/product-pricing/api-volume-1/
- Canada: https://compulife.ca/portfolio-item/api-volume-1/
Each now includes a new section that addresses “scraping.” If scraping is what you are wanting to do with our product, then we would encourage you to look elsewhere for your software quoting solution. We are not here to assist those who want to compete with us.
NOTE: We do offer a Batch Analyzer option for life insurance companies that allows appropriate exporting of large volumes of premium data. That is a different story. As manufacturers of life insurance products, life insurance companies have a legitimate need for such information for competitive intelligence purposes, and that is why we have a product designed specifically for them. In our opinion, there is no legitimate use for such information by life insurance agents/brokers.
